Community Connections - IRHS Alumni Interview

Tanvi Manku

Alessia (she/her) is an IRHS Class of 2017 alumni student and studied Architecture at the University of Toronto, Class of 2021.

How did you decide which field/program you wanted to pursue?

I decided to pursue architecture because I wanted to combine my love of art/design, history/social studies, and math/science!

Why did you choose to attend your university/college?

I chose UofT because it is located in downtown Toronto. I was able to attend concerts, visit museums and art galleries, and even taking classes at the ROM!

What was the biggest challenge you faced transitioning from high school to university/college and how did you overcome it?

The biggest challenge for me was that I began to struggle with my mental health when I started university. I overcame this by being honest with my family, friends, and professors and asking for help.

What did you do in high school that you feel helped prepare you for university/college?

The art/design SHSM helped me prepare for university. In particular, the portfolio-building course helped me get into architecture!

What was your favorite memory from IRHS?

Going to prom with Nyle Arora.

What are you currently doing and what are your plans for the future?

I recently moved into my own apartment downtown and started a full-time job in September as a Junior Designer at an engineering firm.
