Community Connections: IRHS Staff Interview

Tanvi Manku

Ms. Maeda (she/her) is beginning her fifth year teaching at IRHS and teaches Grade 9-12 college and university stream courses.

What advice do you have for students?

Get involved! In class, in athletics, in music, in art, in clubs, in our community- try it! You will meet some amazing humans and hopefully have a lot of fun while participating. You will learn more about the people around you, build strong connections that can last a lifetime, and most importantly- learn about yourself.

Be present. Try not to think too much about the past and the future because otherwise you aren't focusing and enjoying the now. You hear people say it all of the time- life is too short. Take it from someone that dreaded getting up for school every day (and sometimes still does). High school can bring some of the best days and moments that you will look back fondly on. Don't waste them.

What have been your most memorable teaching moments at IRHS?

Ms. Maeda and IRHS students at the Ontario Student Leadership Conference.

My most memorable teaching moments at IRHS are just that- moments. It could be a student coming into class early to chat, a practice that ran well before a big game, an early morning Canada rugby viewing (with McD's breaky), StudCo kids keeping me in line, the Model UN kids blowing me away with their knowledge of our world, a nice note written at the end of a semester, a deep and fruitful class discussion, or a laugh that we shared. But, if I had to pick- it would either be touring NYC with Model UN, Two silver Medals with rugby, or attending OSLC with the amazing leaders we have throughout our school.

Apart from teaching, what other interests/passions/hobbies do you enjoy?

I am a huge foodie! I love to explore the Hamilton (and surrounding area) food scene with my friends and family while sharing some belly laughs (usually at my expense). I also thoroughly enjoy sporting events- more so watching them now that I am too broken and too old to play them myself. It's yoga and the gym for me nowadays!

Aside from food and sports- I rip through TV shows/movies on weeknights, and podcasts/audiobooks on my drive into and home from school. I love a good RomCom or drama to make me cry!

What is one interesting fact about you that students would be surprised to learn about you?

Ms. Maeda in New York City with members of the IRHS Model United Nations delegation.

I feel like my students already know me quite well because I'm an open book (get what I did there?). Something they don't know...I want to eventually travel to every country in the world. However, I may have to pick up another job before that becomes reality :)
