As part of our collaboration with IRHS' Writers Guild, we will be publishing the winning submissions of their bi-weekly writing contests on this website. More details about their competitions are available at @irhswriters on Instagram. See below for Nov 15th's selected entry, written by Soufiya Ruhomaun! The prompt was: "Write a story about a character losing their humanity".

Grade 9

I'm sorry for your loss.

you felt sorry

for my loss

I was dead.

you buried me down 6 feet

and planted your flowers

amongst the dirt i belong with

roses

were rooted into my heart

though i was always a

marigold

of all people,

you

killed me

now i write to you

with the ink i bleed

and the thorns of roses i thought i deserved

please leave me be

in the trapped walls

of my own coffin

sincerely,

a letter to myself.

*marigold: pain and grief
