Every October, Canada strives to increase awareness of the positive outcomes when hiring people with disabilities. It was first proclaimed in Manitoba in 2010, and soon spread to Alberta, Saskatchewan and Ontario.
There are 4 key aspects of NDEAM, which are awareness and education, celebrating contributions, encouraging inclusive practices and community events. NDEAM educates employers about the value of hiring workers with disabilities, and helps them become aware of the barriers they may face in their day to day lives. By celebrating contributions, NDEAM highlights the achievements of workers with disabilities and the incredible contributions and talents they bring to the workplace. NDEAM also encourages employers to create accessible environments and hiring practices and creates events and workshops focusing on promoting diversity and inclusion.
Disability awareness shouldn’t only be made aware of in the workplace, but also in schools and communities. Lots of people in the world live with disabilities, and it’s important to understand and acknowledge their barriers and the values and contributions that they can bring to our communities if we support them.
