The Terry Fox Run is an annual charity event held in memory of Terry Fox, a Canadian athlete and cancer research activist. In 1980, after losing a leg to cancer, Terry Fox started a cross-Canada run called the "Marathon of Hope" to raise awareness and money for cancer research. His goal was to run across the entire country, and he ran for 143 days, covering 5,373 kilometers (or 3,339 miles), before his cancer returned and forced him to stop. Although he passed away in 1981, his legacy lives on through the Terry Fox Run, which started later that year. The run, held in over 60 countries, raises millions of dollars annually for cancer research.
Did you know that since it began, the run has raised over $850 million for cancer research worldwide?
Why is the Terry Fox Run important?
The Terry Fox Run matters because it’s not just about running—it’s about teaching students about perseverance, compassion, and community spirit. It honors Terry Fox’s legacy of courage in battling cancer while doing physical activity and raising awareness for cancer research. Terry’s story is an inspiration to push through challenges and shows the importance of helping others. Plus, it brings the whole school together for a good cause!
What happened at this year’s Terry Fox Run?
Throughout the course of the run, various clubs hosted multiple booths, adding fun and entertainment to the day. We kicked things off at the face-painting station run by the art club, where colorful designs brightened everyone’s faces. Next, we headed over to the table pong booth, where we competed for candy prizes and cheered each other on. There were multiple more exciting booths that followed including musical chairs challenge, dart-throwing game, and beanbag toss!
And as the run came to an end…
It was clear that Terry Fox’s legacy continues to inspire our school. Whether through donations, running, or simply giving our best effort and trying out each activity, students, staff, and even some people walking by came together to honor a hero. This was more than just a school event—seeing everyone come together reminded us that Terry Fox’s legacy lives on in every step we take.
So…ready to lace up and do it all again next year?!
